We are so lucky to have so many great small businesses in Northern California. Here are some gifts and stores that are top of the list. Take notes, and then go shopping.
ONE & TWO Madam Butterfly has been in Sacramento’s Pavilions for over 20 years - a true staple. The faux fur coats are a winter must, the dresses are so very beautiful, and the jewelry is major eye candy. Be sure to fuel up on some caffeine at next door’s Insight Coffee Roasters. You’ll be trying on (and buying) a lot of pretty things. - Saloni dress, $650 & Stud Earrings, $32
THREE Public Land (on 21st Street, Sacramento) is getting a lot of buzz, and its well-deserved. This peaceful, cactus filled space also has a great collection of rugs, ceramic pieces & handmade throw pillows. Their wooden spoons would make the perfect host/ hostess gift. Be sure to check out the gallery in the back too. - Door Mat, $38
FOUR Bitte is so very chic and the perfectly curated kid’s online store. The Bonnsu Miniware is an adorable addition to your child’s dinner routine. Tip: If you’re in Sacramento, set up an appointment to visit their beautiful downtown showroom. Can’t make it? Head to shopbitte.com - Story Box puzzle, $15
FIVE Truck & Barter is why I love living in Northern California. It is thoughtfully curated, located in the beautiful historic Hotel Petaluma, and features locally-made products. - Sarah Dal Porto, Graphic Designer and Petaluma Resident Contributor - Throw Pillow, $85
SIX It’s no secret that I am in love with Auburn’s martin mattox. Imagine a cozy cabin filled with new and vintage clothes, Stetson hats, beautiful ceramic mugs, and a bonus women’s goods sanctuary in the back. It's heaven. Go there and do some shopping, & then walk over to Natural Trading Company for lunch. - Abbey Duval ceramic mug, $45
SEVEN Did you know you can head to Sacramento’s Refill Madness, next to the Co-op, to refill your shampoo and detergent bottles? You can. It’s easy, cost effective, and above all, a nice thing for Mother Earth. You can also buy homemade soap and reusable glass straws there too. Win win. - Blue Bottle Bento reusable lunch bag, $12.99
EIGHT Time Tested Books is a very beautiful, charming bookstore in the middle of Midtown Sacramento. This bookstore is complete with new, used, rare books and bonus - a sunlit reading nook for the kids. Be sure to look for their collection of bookends throughout the store. Excited to start your book? Get comfortable in their mini den nestled between bookshelves. - Educated by Tara Westover, $28 (Plus 20% off!)
NINE Good Gray in downtown Petaluma is where I go for truly unique gifts. It is the perfect place to shop for people who are cooler than you. - Sarah Dal Porto, Graphic Designer and Petaluma Resident Contributor - Leaves and Flowers tea blends, $16
TEN This very cool brick-exposed Sacramento Republic FC Store off of Broadway is THE place for the super fan in your life. The line at Tower Cafe is always long, so go here while you wait. Beer steins, check. Jerseys, check. Hats, check, Sweatshirts, check. Cheers! Go Sac Republic! - Beer glasses, $10
ELEVEN Whether you are in the Downtown Sacramento area, East Sacramento, Land Park or Curtis Park - you have a Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters nearby. The coffee is delicious, the pastries are tasty and the space is beautiful (the tile back-splash at the Land Park location!!). Also it’s worth mentioning, I think their Almond Milk Chai Latte is the best in the city. - Espresso Spice Rub brought to you by The Allspicery, V. Miller Meats & Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters, $6 3 oz., $16 10 oz.
TWELVE Located in the heart of Land Park, pop into Parkside Pharmacy for pretty much everything - including ban.do iPhone cases & children’s coloring books. The beauty and skincare selection is top notch. Plus, it's the perfect place to stop when you're headed to a party and forgot a gift. - Lollia body butter, $34
Caroline Dunivant - Thank you for helping me scour Sacramento for the best gifts. And best of all, thank you for lending me your graphic design skills and making the guide here and on IG so beautiful.
Sarah Dal Porto - Many thanks to another great graphic designer in my life. Your Petaluma eye on what’s cool, pretty and chic is always reliable. Thank you for sending over your faves!
And thank you to Sacramento, Auburn, Petaluma and your amazing small businesses!
